Browns Central Hotel Review: Best Boutique Hotel in Lisbon?
Finding the best boutique hotel in Lisbon can be a challenge, especially when you want a mix of luxury, a quiet atmosphere, and a central location.
During our recent visit, we stayed at this property to see if it truly stands out in a city known for its historic charm and steep hills.

In this Brown’s Central Hotel review, we are going to share our insider experience, from the vintage room details to the surprising breakfast options.
We’ll walk you through everything we noticed during our stay, who it’s best for, and a few tips to help you decide if it fits your travel style.
Full Disclosure: This stay was a collaboration where we received a room upgrade and complimentary breakfast. However, this post reflects my genuine experience, and I was not asked to review my article prior to posting to ensure you get my honest perspective.
Where is Brown’s Central Hotel Located?
Browns Central Hotel is located in the heart of Baixa on Rua da Assunção, a charming pedestrian-only street.
Brown’s Central Hotel is incredibly close to Rua Augusta and Praça do Comércio. This is super convenient because Praça do Comércio is a major hub where several bus and tram lines stop.
Overview of Lisbon: Why Visit Lisbon?
Lisbon has so much history to explore, given that it is considered the second-oldest city in Europe after Athens.

You’ll find architecture that reflects the many periods this city has gone through, such as Roman, Moorish, Christian, and the era of dictatorship (to mention a few).

Beyond the history, Lisbon has become very popular among travelers. You might be interested to know that BookRetreats categorized it as a “happy city” for holidays due to its healthy gastronomic options, the ease of navigating on foot, and the annual sunshine.

How quiet are the rooms at night, especially those facing the street?
We loved being in the heart of the city without the noise; even though we were steps from the action, our room remained perfectly quiet.
When we went to sleep, we did not hear any noise that bothered us. The wall with windows to the street side did a great job of soundproofing and keeping the noise out.
Getting To Brown’s Central Hotel from the Airport
We arrived at the Lisbon airport and took a rideshare using Bolt (the local version of Uber). It cost about €11 and dropped us off on Rua dos Sapateiros, which is technically right next to the hotel.

This is a huge plus because many hotels in Lisbon are tucked away on streets where taxis have to drop you off several blocks away.

Our welcoming cocktails and the inviting front entrance of Brown’s Central Hotel
Since we arrived before our room was ready, we were able to drop off our luggage in a secure storage area, which allowed us to start exploring the city right away without being weighed down.

Once we officially checked in later that afternoon, we were greeted with a refreshing welcome cocktail—a lovely touch that made the check-in process feel special.
Does Brown’s Central Offer A Shuttle?
If you prefer to have everything set up for you so you don’t have to worry about the logistics, the hotel offers an airport shuttle service.
Booking Tip: How to Get the Best Price
Before you book, we want to let you know that we found booking directly through the official Brown’s Hotel website was actually cheaper than any other third-party site.

We recommend checking the hotel’s website first. If not, your second option is to use Booking.com, as they offer great member deals.
Room Options at Browns Central
Before we dive into our specific room, it’s helpful to know that the hotel offers six different room types to fit different budgets and needs:
- Small Room Interior View
- Small Room Street View
- Superior Room (The type we stayed in)
- Mansard Room
- Junior Suite
- Master Suite
Superior Room Tour
We stayed in Room 220 on the second floor, which was a Superior Room with a street view of Rua dos Sapateiros. Despite the central location, the room was incredibly quiet.

The room is spacious and perfectly organized for travelers. Here is a breakdown of the amenities:
- The Bed: The bed was so comfortable that it felt like sleeping on clouds.
- The Vintage Touch: We really loved the Marshall speaker, which you can connect to via Bluetooth. It gives the room a cool, vintage feel.
- For US Travelers: The room has several European outlets and USB Type-A ports.
- Work & Connectivity: There is a dedicated desk area where I worked on my blog. I used the complimentary WiFi on my laptop and mobile and found the internet speed in the room and the lobby to be perfect for social media and work on my website.

- Luxury Perks: The room includes a mini fridge, Nespresso machine, tea maker, and unlimited complimentary water. They even provide a complimentary bottle of wine with glasses and a corkscrew (a huge plus for a relaxing night in).
- The Details: You’ll find a closet with drawers, an iron with a small ironing board, a powerful hair blower, and slippers.
Note: The mini-fridge contains snacks and refreshments that are not included and will be billed at checkout.
The Bathroom
The bathroom design reminded me so much of the Virgin Voyages Rockstar bathrooms, because it features marble tiles on the walls and floors, a rainwater shower, a water hose, and glass shower doors.

Superior Room

Superior Room
It feels spacious thanks to the large mirror and great lighting.
- Essentials: The body wash, shampoo/conditioner, and hand soap are from the Damana hotel line, which is conveniently all vegan. I used them daily, and they left my hair and skin feeling very soft. They also provide makeup remover pads and a shower cap.
- The Privacy: The bathroom is separated from the bedroom by a sliding door. We noticed it didn’t have a lock, but it wasn’t a big deal for us; it simply makes this room type a best fit for couples.
Pro Tip: Make sure that you place the floor towel super flat. We noticed that when we properly placed the towel, it did not roll when we opened the shower door.
The entire room only has one mirror (in the bathroom). If you are getting ready at the same time as someone else, we recommend bringing a small travel mirror. This was especially helpful for us when we were rushing to get ready.
The Breakfast
The buffet-style breakfast is served from 7:30 AM to 11:00 AM, costs €18 per person, and the variety is amazing, and totally worth it. It meant we could have a massive breakfast before heading out early to Sintra and exploring Lisbon, saving us the time of trying to find food elsewhere.

I wasn’t sure what to expect since Portuguese culture is heavy on seafood and meat, but the buffet was full of plant-based and even gluten-free options:
- Hot Options: Mushrooms, spinach, hashbrowns, pan-roasted tomatoes, baked beans, and green beans.
- Fresh & Cold: Pineapple, kiwi, watermelon, grapes, seeds (sunflower and pumpkin), nuts, various breads, juices, and coffee.
- Service: The staff was so attentive. After I asked for warm oat milk on the first day, they brought it to me every following morning without me even asking!

Dining: Brown’s Brasserie
In addition to breakfast, the hotel has Brown’s Brasserie on the ground floor, open from 12:00 PM to 10:00 PM. Right in front of the hotel, they have several outdoor tables where you can enjoy dishes and drinks and soak in the vibrant city vibe.

If you have no dietary restrictions, there are many options on the Brown’s Brasserie menu. However, for my plant-based travelers, the options are a bit more limited but still available. One night, we grabbed the potato fries and paired them with cocktails from the bar, and they also offer:
- Avocado Toast
- Guacamole with chips
- Sautéed vegetables
- Salads and Gazpacho soup
The Bar at Browns Central
Besides the Brasserie, the hotel features a stylish bar that is open daily from 12:00 PM to 11:00 PM. They offer a wonderful variety of wines, cocktails, and coffee, making it a great spot to unwind after a day of exploring.

One of my favorite details: In the bar seating area, they have a frame with a Spotify code so you can listen to the lobby music at home. The station is “Brown’s Hotel Group – A sound experience” and features about 111 hours of great music.
We have been listening to it constantly since we got home; it is the perfect way to keep the vacation vibe alive and transport ourselves back to that relaxing environment long after our trip was over.
Does Brown’s Central Hotel have a Michelin Key?
Brown’s Central doesn’t have a Michelin Key yet, but its sister property, Brown’s Avenue Hotel (located near the luxury Avenida da Liberdade), already has one Michelin Key.
We have visited other Michelin Key hotels, like Hotel Seventy Barcelona or Hotel Greystone Miami (just to mention a few).
From what we experienced in Brown’s Central, we feel that they are working hard to get a Michelin Key distinction. The individual attention and amenities make it feel like the best boutique hotel in Lisbon for travelers who value care and detail.
Is brown’s Central accessible For Travelers with mobility issues?
The hotel itself is good for reduced mobility; there is a ramp at the main entrance and a small elevator in the lobby. The showers have glass doors with a low threshold.
However, a quick word of advice: While the hotel is accessible, Lisbon itself can be a headache for those with reduced mobility. The city is full of steep hills, stairs, and cobblestone pedestrian streets that might be difficult to navigate, and this is something to keep in mind when planning your trip to Lisbon.
Is this the best boutique hotel in Lisbon?
Browns Central Hotel is a 10/10 and is a perfect fit primarily for solo travelers or couples looking for a central location and a sophisticated vibe. Between the complimentary wine for a romantic night and the curated music in the bar area, the atmosphere is hard to beat.
The breakfast was a major highlight for us. The fact that it opens so early and offers such a wide variety of plant-based options was a huge deal.

It saved us so much time and energy; we never had to worry about researching where to find a vegan-friendly start to our day. Once we finished breakfast, we were fueled up and ready to head out and explore the city immediately.
The cleanliness of the hotel also deserves a special mention. The daily room service did an excellent job, and the room was always spotless when we returned from a long day of walking through Lisbon.
