Overview of Valencia: Why Visit Valencia?
Why should you visit this picturesque historical city? We recently explored Valencia while traveling in Spain for a Virgin Voyages cruise from Barcelona. From there, we returned to Barcelona to board our Virgin Voyages cruise. In this post, we cover what it’s like sailing from Barcelona. You can also check out our full cruise port guide on the Virgin Voyages Mediterranean itinerary.
We decided to take a high-speed train from Barcelona to Valencia, and with only one full day to explore, we were able to explore most of the iconic places in just 24 hours. We put together a step-by-step guide on taking the train from Barcelona airport to Valencia and planning your trip efficiently.
Valencia is renowned as the birthplace of paella, and during our visit, we discovered not only fascinating historical attractions but also enjoyed some delicious vegan cuisine in Valencia.
Our culinary adventure even included dining at the exceptional Ricard Camarena Restaurant, where two Michelin Stars and three Repsol Suns made every dish a true work of art. Hotel Location: A Review of SH Valencia Colon Hotel
We booked the SH Colon Valencia Hotel for its reputation as one of the best hotels in Valencia (and I’ll explain why). Its central location made it incredibly convenient for us to walk from the North Train Station with our luggage.
Additionally, the SH Colon Valencia Hotel is just a short stroll away from the heart of the historical center, allowing us to minimize the use of a taxi or Cabify (the local equivalent of Uber in Spain) and explore the city on foot.

We found a minimalist main entrance featuring double metal glass doors, slightly hidden next to the public parking entrance.
Tip: If you are exploring Valencia for just one day, I highly recommend checking out the top spots you don’t want to miss before you leave.
Is the SH Colon Valencia Hotel Budget-Friendly?
Since we were only going to be just two nights in Valencia, we chose the SH Colon Valencia Hotel for its budget-friendly offerings. Prices might range from $193 to $211 for a standard room, depending on the season. The vibe is a modern and budget-conscious approach, and you have access to several amenities I’ll cover below in this Valencia SH Colon Valencia Hotel review.
If you are looking for a more upscale experience in a prime location in Valencia, I recommend checking out my second option: the Helen Berger Boutique Hotel. I’m planning to stay there on my next trip to Valencia for a more luxurious experience. Just a 12-minute walk from the Valencia Historical Center, the Helen Berger is also distinguished by holding one Michelin Key. While the SH Colon is the main focus here, the Helen Berger offers another fantastic alternative for those seeking a luxury experience with a unique atmosphere.
Valencia SH Colon Valencia Hotel Review: The SH Colon Hotel Room
There are five different rooms available in the SH Colon Valencia Hotel, from standard rooms to suites. We opted for the standard room, and we were lucky to stay in the standard room on the 6th floor, which provided a pleasant view of the hotel terrace. The standard room includes a cozy double bed and enough space to accommodate only two adults.
The standard room is about 16 square meters (172 sq ft), and it includes a decent wardrobe. However, since we were staying only two nights, we didn’t want to unpack and found ourselves with minimal space for our luggage. Although they offer to accommodate a baby crib in this room if you opt to include it, you’ll find that there is not enough space to walk around the room.

The decoration in the SH Colon Valencia Hotel standard room is minimal and modern, which we really appreciated because it creates a spacious and uncluttered atmosphere. The room is equipped with a mini fridge, a flat-screen TV, tea makers, plus a safe for your valuables. We loved that this room included a calming pillow spray, the scent was delicious, and it helped to have a restful night’s sleep.
The SH Colon Valencia Hotel Room Bathroom
The bathroom was my favorite part of the room because it was spacious, clean, and with a lot of lighting. The shower lighting gets activated upon entry to the shower, and it features a rain shower head and a handheld wand.
There is a small magnified mirror, but I found it a bit difficult to use because it was mounted too high for me, and the lack of a movable arm made it tough to reposition for better access.

That said, the bathroom is equipped with a powerful hair dryer that I loved because I didn’t have to unpack my hair straightener. The bathroom also has complimentary toiletries like a shower cap, a toothbrush, body cream, hand soap, conditioner, and shampoo.
Valencia SH Colon Valencia Hotel Review: Food Options and Amenities
They offer Breakfast on the first level for a surcharge of $20 (might vary), available from 7:00 AM to 11:30 AM. We were happy because the breakfast offered several plant-based milks, juices, cereals, bread (not gluten-free), and fresh fruits. If you’re in the mood for just coffee or drinks, you can just order them separately for an additional fee. The server in the breakfast area will prepare a delicious coffee using a Nespresso machine, with plant-based milk options available.

They also offer lunch and dinner; however, I did not try it because the SH Hotel Colon menu is limited to vegan and gluten-free options.
Even though the hotel didn’t have many options for lunch and dinner, we were able to explore some incredible spots a short walk from the hotel. Don’t miss my complete guide to the best vegan eateries in Valencia. It’s packed with recommendations (including where to enjoy a fresh paella without sulfites) to make your trip easier.

Amenities at the SH Colon Valencia Hotel
One of the highlights of my stay at the SH Colon Valencia Hotel was the beautiful terrace at the back of the first floor. It features a cozy bar, several chairs, tables, and comfortable outdoor sofas. When we arrived at the hotel after a day exploring the vibrant streets of Valencia, we spent quality time on the terrace enjoying a few cocktails.
There is a school park right behind the terrace, and even though I heard some mixed SH Colon Hotel reviews about the noise level, we found it to be quite peaceful.

Valencia SH Colon Valencia Hotel Review: The SH Colon Service
During our stay, we had pleasant interactions with the front desk staff and the servers at the breakfast buffet and bar. Each team member was very friendly, especially the staff at the breakfast buffet, who were happy to prepare us a delicious coffee with oat milk.
Would I Recommend the SH Colon Valencia Hotel?
To be honest with you, even though the standard room was a bit tight for our luggage, plus we didn’t like that there was no coffee maker in the room, I would definitely recommend the SH Colon Valencia Hotel. The location is perfect since we were walking distance from the historical spots, and the train station, and if you’re a shopaholic person there are several stores like Zara, Mango, and Lush.

Additionally, the breakfast buffet impressed us with its vegan options, and we loved the relaxing vibe on the terrace and the friendly staff at the breakfast buffet made the stay more enjoyable.
Overall, the SH Colon Valencia Hotel truly stands out as one of the best hotels in Valencia, Spain, especially for those seeking comfort, modern aesthetics, and great amenities on a budget (and now you know why).
