No, Amber Cove and Taino Bay are not the same port, even though both are located along the north coast of the Dominican Republic. Amber Cove is another cruise terminal in Puerto Plata, but it’s an exclusive port owned by Carnival Cruise.
On the other hand, Taino Bay stands out as the newest cruise terminal, and it’s the closest one to Puerto Plata town, making it super convenient if you want to explore the local area. 🇩🇴
I visited this lovely port during my trip with Virgin Voyages Dominican Daze in October 2024 and one-way to SJ: DR, St Maarten & BVI in November 2025. The Virgin Voyages trips that typically make stops at this port include:

What to Expect at Taino Bay?
The vibe at the Taino Bay Cruise Terminal instantly reminded me of the Virgin Voyages Beach Club at Bimini. It has that same resort-style atmosphere, with upbeat music that keeps the energy light and fun throughout the day. The main difference is that Taino Bay operates independently from the cruise line, so if you plan on eating here, make sure to bring some cash with you.

If your itinerary includes a stop at Bimini, you might be interested in the post that goes into detail on what to expect at the Virgin Voyages’ Beach Club at Bimini, how to prepare, and how to have the best time.

Wrong port… took me a while to figure this out
Thank you so much for pointing that out! I see how that was confusing. I’ve gone ahead and revised the post to make it clear that those distilleries are located at the San Juan cruise port in Puerto Rico, not in Puerto Plata. I appreciate you helping me make the guide better for everyone.
