Boutique Hotel Barcelona: Occidental Diagonal 414 Review

Do you sacrifice cleanliness for a better location, or safety for a lower price? For me, a dirty bathroom is a total deal-breaker. If you are searching for the perfect boutique hotel Barcelona offers, you know how hard it is to find that balance.

Pro Tip: Before you even head to the hotel, make sure you’re fully prepared for the city’s unique quirks by reading my guide on everything you need to know before traveling to Barcelona.

Where Is Occidental Diagonal 414 Located?

The hotel is perfectly situated in the Eixample district on Avinguda Diagonal. It’s far enough from the crowds to feel safe and local, but close enough to walk to Passeig de Gràcia.

Note: Since you’re so close to the architectural famous spots, this hotel is the perfect home base if you’re following my one-day ‘must-do’ Barcelona itinerary.

Why Choose This Boutique Hotel Barcelona Gem?

While I stayed at Occidental Diagonal 414 for our pre-cruise stay, this spot is actually perfect for any traveler who wants to be budget-conscious without sacrificing an upscale feel.

Note: We stayed here specifically to rest before boarding Virgin Voyages for a Mediterranean adventure to Cannes, Ibiza, Palma Mallorca, and Ajaccio. If you are heading to the port next, you can check out my full Mediterranean cruise port guide to see exactly what to do at each of these stops so you don’t miss a thing.

We paid around $265 per night in early May, which is a great value for Barcelona, Spain’s best hotels in the boutique category.

One of my favorite “vibe” details was in the lobby: they have a complimentary water station set up on a super original table made from a vintage bicycle with a wood top. They even provide real glass cups, which is such a nice touch compared to plastic.

Room Options

When choosing your room, the hotel offers three main layouts to fit your needs:

  • Superior Room: (The one we chose!) Perfect for shorter stays where you don’t need a massive amount of space.
  • Deluxe Room: A bit more room to breathe if you are staying longer.
  • Deluxe Room Terrace: The top choice if you want your own private outdoor space to enjoy the Barcelona sun.

Our room was on the 6th floor. It was cozy but incredibly well-designed. Underneath the high windows (which looked out to the street), there is a high bench where you can sit or stand to watch the city go by.

How quiet are the rooms at night, especially those facing the street?

When we went to sleep, we did not hear any noise that bothered us. The wall with windows to the street side did a great job of sealing and keeping the noise out.

We only noticed the street noise the next morning when we opened the window to see the spectacular sunrise.

Room Details You Need to Know:

  • The Mirrors: There are so many mirrors! I loved this because I could get ready so much quicker without having to fight my husband for mirror space.
  • Coffee & Tea: They provide an electric kettle for boiling water, instant coffee, tea bags, and one complimentary bottle of water.
  • Bathroom Perks: The sink was stocked with a dental kit (toothbrush), vanity kit, and tissues.

Pro Tip: Make sure you bring an EU power adapter. Everything is EU electric receptacles, though they do have some USB ports.

The Bathroom & The “4-Minute Shower” Concept

Cleanliness is my top priority, and I found the bathroom here to be exceptionally clean and well-maintained, a huge plus in my book.

The shower experience is actually part of a Barceló Re-gen initiative to save water. Instead of the TV connecting to your phone, it’s the shower.

There is a Spotify code you can scan that plays a 4-minute song, challenging you to finish your shower by the time the music ends.

Book Your Stay:

You should check the current Occidental Diagonal 414 availability here because this is one of the most recommended hotels in Barcelona for travelers who want a spotless, quiet retreat without leaving the heart of the city.

Important Bathroom Layout Notes:

  • Spaciousness: The shower is very spacious with a rain shower head and a handheld hose.
  • Privacy: The shower and toilet doors are sliding tempered glass. You can’t see the person inside clearly, but you can see a little bit of the shape of the person if they have the interior light on. Keep this in mind if you aren’t sharing the room with a partner.

Gym & The Hidden Courtyard

If you need to move your body, there is a gym on the first floor. But the real “hidden gem” on this floor is the interior courtyard.

It’s filled with comfortable outdoor furniture and is incredibly quiet. It’s the perfect place to escape the city noise and read a book in peace.

B-Heaven: The Ultimate Barcelona Hotel Rooftop Pool

The rooftop bar plus pool, called B-Heaven, is exactly what you want from a hotel rooftop in Barcelona. It has incredible views of the city skyline and a vibe that feels both exclusive and welcoming.

We visited in May, and it was a bit chilly, so we didn’t use the pool (and didn’t see anyone else in the water either). However, it was still a hotspot.

We spotted plenty of visitors, who didn’t even seem to be staying at the hotel, drinking cocktails and enjoying the vibe.

What you need to know before you go to B-Heaven

  • Season: The bar is open from April to October.
  • Hotel Guests: You can enjoy the space from 07:00 to 11:00 PM.
  • Non-Hotel Guests: If you aren’t staying at the hotel, you are welcome from 5:00 PM to 11:00 PM.
  • Menus: If you want to plan your sunset snack, you can check out the B-Heaven cocktail and tapas menus here.

Note: It gets very windy at sunset and feels a little chilly, so bring a light jacket if you are planning to visit the rooftop.

Are there any restaurants within walking distance of Occidental Diagonal 414?

We opted to skip the hotel breakfast (which had a surcharge starting at EUR 18 for adults ) because we wanted something specific. Just a short walk away is Wild Food, a spot we absolutely loved for its vegan and gluten-free breakfast and tapas.

In my post about the best vegan restaurants in Barcelona, I share not only Wild Food but also other hidden gems we discovered that you won’t find in the typical tourist brochures.

Wondering if you should head to Valencia after exploring Barcelona?

Many travelers opt for the high-velocity train from Barcelona to Valencia, which is such a seamless way to see more of Spain. I’ve documented that entire process in my guide on how to get to Valencia from Barcelona by train, along with a complete itinerary of what to do in Valencia once you arrive and a recommendation for the best boutique hotel to stay in the heart of the historic center.

And yes, I even found the best vegan food and paella in Valencia, it was a dream to find plant-based versions of this iconic dish in the very city where it was born.

The paella was genuinely delicious but surprisingly, it still didn’t top my experience dining a fully plant-based tasting menu at Ricard Camarena Restaurant in Valencia.

Is Occidental Diagonal 414 accessible for travelers with mobility issues?

Yes, there is a ramp on the main entrance to get inside the building. However, keep in mind that there are only two small elevators in the lobby, which locals and hotel guests use. The space is very tight; it felt to be roughly a 5ft x 5ft square.

Is It One of the Best Hotels to Stay in Barcelona?

If you want to be in the heart of historical places but far from the tourist “craziness”, this is it. It’s perfect for the budget-conscious traveler who still wants a clean, modern, and stylish home base.

I would definitely book Occidental Diagonal 414 again if I needed a well-maintained place for a couple of days.
