What is the Typical Food in Puerto Rico?

For a vegan, it can be tricky because traditional recipes often use meat as a flavor base. However, the rapid growth of plant-based communities makes finding vegan food in San Juan, Puerto Rico, much easier than it used to be.
Local Pro Tip: If you visit Casa Bacardi for a tour, look for the small food kiosk nearby; they actually serve a delicious vegan mofongo.
My Favorite Vegan Restaurants in San Juan, Puerto Rico
1. Berlingeri Cocina Artesanal
- Open Hours: Mon–Tue 11 AM–3 PM; Wed–Sat 9 AM–3 PM.
- Price Range: $10–20 per person
- Parking: They have a parking lot and will refund up to 1 hour of parking.
Vibe: This place is a little hidden! You enter from McCleary Street, behind the laboratory building in the back left corner.

It has a beautiful green wall façade and a cozy indoor/outdoor vibe, though we stayed inside to escape the heat.

We tried the Sopa de Vianda (root vegetable soup) made with malanga, yuca, and plantain. It was extremely tasty, and you can feel all the flavors and that perfect fibrous texture of the yuca. It is vegan and gluten-free.

Be sure to ask your server for the soup of the day, as the starch used varies daily. Also, don’t leave without dessert because all of theirs are vegan, and some are gluten-free.
2. La Isla Cafe San Juan
- Open Hours: Mon–Sun 8 AM–3 PM.
- Price Range: $10–20 per person
- Parking: Tricky! They have a tiny spot behind the building where you might block others, so we recommend parking on the street in front of the nearby homes.

Vibe: A multifunction café with a unique Spanish interior design. This is an indoor-only seating restaurant.

It features rental workspaces and a cozy zero-waste shop where locals buy seeds and dry grains. They even have yoga on Thursdays at 6:30 PM.

For a vegan breakfast, San Juan stop, this is perfect. We had the chickpea quesadilla: scrambled chickpeas in an almond flour tortilla with avocado and a delicious homemade vegan pumpkin cheese and cilantro sauce. The homemade sauce gave it a flavor that really impressed us.
3. Frescura Vegan Kitchen
- Open Hours: Tue–Sat 11 AM–8 PM.
- Price Range: $10–20 per person
- Parking: Super easy with several dedicated spots for the restaurant.
Vibe: 100% plant-based with indoor and outdoor seating. This is the spot for local cuisine like rice, beans, and mashed vegetable roots.

We found it during our visit to the Ron del Barrilito tour, which is one of the best things to do in San Juan, Puerto Rico.

I had the “Aguacate Relleno” (avocado stuffed with vegan tuna salad) and creamy mashed root vegetables.

My husband had the Panchito Chickin Burger (seitan, cashew sour cream, mex dressing, and vegan cheese).
The portions were very filling, and the “Menu del Dia” (dish of the day) changes daily, so always ask what’s new.
4. Terrestre Cocina Compasion
- Open Hours: Thu–Sun 12 PM–7 PM.
- Price Range: $20–30 per person
- Parking: Very limited (2 spots in front). We had to park across the street.
Tip: Please be careful if you go at night; the street lighting is limited, and cars drive fast.

Vibe: Small, cozy, and your top choice for vegan sushi in Puerto Rico. It blends Asian style with local cuisine perfectly.
The Flower Power Roll (cauliflower tempura, vegan cream cheese, and cilantro mayo) was a total explosion of flavors.

Orange Flower Cauliflower, Lomeiny veggies, and Saucy Veggie Stir Fry

I also tried the Saucy Veggie Stir Fry with eggplant, tofu, and broccoli (gluten-free), and my husband had the Orange Flower Cauliflower (gluten-free).

While my family had Lomeiny Veggies with ginger garlic soy sauce, and Pad Thai (gluten-free) made with vegan “fish” sauce and a creamy tamarind sauce.

We were so impressed with the mix of textures, not to mention the delicious and refreshing dessert.
5. Dashi Ramen San Juan

- Price Range: $20–30 per person
- Parking: Located behind the restaurant with several lots available.

Vibe: Indoor style only with an intimate, sophisticated vibe and dim lighting. Perfect for a romantic dinner.

They have one ramen with vegan options: the Veggie Ramen, which comes with tofu, bok choy, carrots, cabbage, roasted tomato, scallions, and woodear mushrooms in a delicious vegetable broth. Ask for no egg to make it vegan.
While this was a perfect bowl of ramen, in my opinion, nothing compares to the ramen we had at Umami in Barcelona, Spain. If you only have one day in Barcelona, Spain, you absolutely have to visit this spot, because it is a highlight in my Barcelona Vegan Guide for a reason.

I chose the sweet potato gluten-free noodles while my husband had wheat noodles. I also tried the Sakemar martini (Japanese style with Junmai sake, gin, and whiskey), which was surprisingly delicious. My husband enjoyed the Sake flight, which comes with four different varieties.
6. Bori Vegan
- Open Hours: Mon 10 AM–2 PM; Tue–Fri 10 AM–6 PM; Sat 10 AM–3 PM.
- Price Range: $10–20 per person
- Parking: A few spots are available right in front.
Vibe: Full vegan restaurant with many gluten-free options. While I haven’t visited the physical location yet, I have ordered delivery several times.
The food presentation and flavor are always delicious, and I love that the dishes aren’t too greasy. They offer veganized Puerto Rican dishes, and I recommend checking their social media for the daily chef special before you order.
7. 100%HP
- Open Hours: Daily 12 PM–10 PM.
- Price Range: $10–20 per person
- Parking: No dedicated parking; you must park on the public street.
Vibe: Famous because the owner is a radio host, Funky Joe. It’s very colorful with murals promoting the plant-based lifestyle.
This restaurant started as a spot for veganized Puerto Rican fritters (made from yuca or green banana dough) and has expanded its menu significantly. It is a vegan heaven, though gluten-free options are more limited here.
