Where Do Cruise Ships Dock in Tortola?
Cruise ships dock in Road Town, the capital of Tortola. Once you disembark, you’ll walk into a developed cruise port area filled with shopping stores, souvenirs, and small bars.
Tortola, BVI Cruise Port Map
The pedestrian area is clean, organized, and clearly designed for cruise visitors rather than a true local experience.
If you want to explore outside the port, we recommend heading out early. Taxi buses operate on a schedule with a last return time, which we explain below.
What Is the Port Area in Tortola Like?
The cruise port area is modern and well-maintained. You’ll find:
This is the only concentrated shopping area nearby, so if you like browsing for souvenirs, this is where it mostly happens. To get a real sense of local life, you’ll need to leave the port area.

One Day in Tortola Itinerary
Our visit to Tortola was part of a Valiant Lady ship reposition trip with Virgin Voyages cruise from Miami to San Juan.
In these articles, we cover our experience visiting Taino Bay Cruise Port in Puerto Plata and St. Martin Cruise Port, which were other cruise ports visited during this trip.
Speaking of cruise ports, we learned that finding the perfect beach usually requires a little planning. Unlike the structured taxi buses in Tortola, our beach day in Puerto Rico used a different system. If San Juan is also on your itinerary, check out our guide on how to spend one day in the San Juan cruise port.
Below is exactly how we spent our cruise day in Tortola, structured step-by-step for easy planning.
Morning: Disembark & Head to Cane Garden Bay

How Far is Cane Garden Bay from the cruise port?

Note: We don’t recommend renting a car unless you’re very comfortable driving on narrow roads and on the opposite side of the road.
Alternatively, if privacy is your priority, you can always book a private transfer or taxi to Cane Garden Bay for the day.

Late Morning: Visit to Callwood Rum Distillery
Note: You can also skip the tour and do a tasting outside: $1 per person for several small samples.
How Far Is Callwood Rum Distillery From Cane Garden Bay?
From the bus drop-off at Cane Garden Bay (Pin A on the map), we walked about 5 minutes along the beach to reach the Callwood Rum Distillery (Pin B on the map).
Is the Callwood Rum Distillery on Tortola Worth Visiting?
Yes, the tour is informative and covers the family legacy, history, cane-growing process, and how they create their rum.

Callwood Rum Distillery

Callwood Rum Distillery
This distillery dates back to the 1600s, and try to visit them from March to August if you want to see the production in action.
Can I buy rum to take back to the ship?
Yes, you can buy rum in Callwood Rum Distillery to take to the ship. During our visit, we tried five different flavors and bought 2 bottles (200ml), the 10-year and the Panty Dropper around $6 each.

Midday to Afternoon: Cane Garden Bay Beach
After the distillery tour, we walked back to Cane Garden Bay, the most famous beach in Tortola.

What to Expect at Cane Garden Bay?
We stayed here for about two hours before returning to the cruise port.
Is Cane Garden Bay Too Crowded When a Cruise Ship Is in Port?
During our visit, the beach had many cruisers, and at times, local beach restaurants didn’t have enough staff for the crowd. Still, it did not feel uncomfortable or overwhelming.

Other Things to Do in Tortola Off a Cruise Ship
The Baths are another popular spot, and you need to be able to climb large boulders. However, we skipped it because we travelled with family members with mobility issues.
Nevertheless, we are planning to book this excursion to The Baths the next time we visit this enchanting island.
This excursion is $40.00 per adult and includes the Virgin Gorda ferry from Tortola cruise port and then a taxi from Virgin Gorda ferry dock to The Baths.
Note: If you book the Baths excursion, make sure to bring cash, because there is a $3 per person fee to enter the Baths area.
What Currency Is Used in Tortola, and Do They Take Credit Cards?
The official currency is the US Dollar. Bring cash for the taxi bus and the distillery tour. At Cane Garden Bay, we were able to pay for drinks with a credit card.

Is Tortola Safe?
Yes. We never felt unsafe:
Vendors were not pushy, and the general atmosphere felt calm and friendly.
