Where do cruise ships dock in San Juan, Puerto Rico?
San Juan has two cruise ports:
- Old San Juan Cruise Port
- Panamericano Cruise Terminal
Old San Juan Cruise Port and Panamericano Cruise Terminal
We docked at Panamericano because it was our last stop on a Virgin Voyages repositioning cruise from Miami to San Juan, where we also visited Tortola cruise port and Taino Bay cruise port.
Disembark at San Juan cruise port
Once you disembark and pass the cruise port checkpoint, you are immediately in the local culture because the terminal is not exclusive to cruisers.

This cruise port feels a totally different vibe from the Taino Bay cruise port and the Costa Maya cruise port.
At the cruise port, you’ll find taxis available, but mainly useful for airport rides and not for exploring San Juan.
How to Get Around in San Juan, Puerto Rico?
- The easiest way to move around in San Juan in one day is by Uber.

Top Places to Choose in One Day in San Juan, Puerto Rico:
Since time is limited, we focused on the most popular and easily accessible spots near the cruise ports.
Below are the top places we recommend you choose to visit.
1. Liquor Distillery Tours
If you love learning about how liquors are made and sampling them, here are two great options near the cruise ports.
Casa Bacardi Tour San Juan

- Getting There:
- Option 1: Take the $1 ferry from Old San Juan to Cataño, then a Bacardi bus/taxi (~$6 per person), which takes you to Casa Bacardi.
- Option 2: Take an Uber directly from the cruise port (which is what we did to have more control over time).
- Option 3: If you prefer a fully guided experience, you can also book a tour that includes a drive through the historic area of Old San Juan before heading to the Casa Bacardí Legacy Tour. This option is perfect if your cruise docks in Old San Juan, since the meeting point and drop-off are both within walking distance.

- Hours:
- Sunday–Thursday: 10:30 AM–6 PM
- Friday–Saturday: 10:30 AM–7 PM
- Time Needed: We spent approximately 40 minutes on the Legacy Tour.

Tip: This tour is very popular, so we recommend booking the Casa Bacardi tour in advance of your visit.
How is the Casa Bacardi Distillery Tour?
We were impressed by how well-made this tour is. The tour begins in an open pavilion designed by the architect Félix Candela, master of thin-shell structures, where you receive your complimentary cocktail.

You take a bus through the facilities, get a walking tour, watch a short film about the family history and their move to Puerto Rico, and visit their museum featuring production growth. The tour ends in a tasting bar where we tasted a special blend that is only sold in this location.
Are There Any Vegan And Gluten-Free Options At Casa Bacardi Distillery?
At Casa Bacardi Distillery, there is a small kiosk named “El Cuchifrito,” offering vegan and gluten-free options like Pigeon Peas Creamy Hummus and Vegan Mofongo.

Ron del Barrilito Distillery Tour

- Getting There: You can take an Uber since it’s about 15–20 minutes from the cruise port, or you can book a private transportation option that includes round-trip pickup and your Ron del Barrilito tour ticket (from either Old San Juan Cruise Port Muelle 1 or Panamericano). It’s a great choice if you prefer everything handled for you.
- Hours: Monday–Sunday, 10 AM–8 PM
- Time Needed: We spent approximately 40 minutes on the Heritage Skip-the-Line Tour.

How is the Ron del Barrilito Distillery Tour?
Once you arrive, you check in at a wooden structure. The heritage tour is a walking tour through the production and storage areas, and also a visit to the owner’s home with original furniture and family photos.

Interesting Fact: You’ll also see the famous Barrel No. 1, sealed since 1952. The legend says it will be opened once Puerto Rico becomes independent from the USA.

The tour ends at the bar, where you get one complimentary cocktail made with the delicious Ron del Barrilito.
Which one of the distilleries in San Juan should to choose if you only have time for one?
Choosing between Ron del Barrilito and Casa Bacardi depends on the type of experience you’re looking for.
- Casa Bacardi feels more polished, high-end, and commercialized. The experience focuses a lot on history, branding, and their global production, with a beautiful facility and a more structured tour.
- Ron del Barrilito offers a more intimate and artisanal experience. You actually walk through the production areas, see the facilities up close, and get more of that small-batch, traditional feel.
2. Visit Ocean Park Beach (Best beach near San Juan cruise port)
You can’t leave San Juan without visiting one of the famous beaches nearby. The Ocean Park Beach is located in Condado, which is one of the most upscale neighborhoods in San Juan.

This beach is very popular for people who love kitesurfing. It’s mostly locals hanging out, which gives you a more authentic feel.

If you prefer calmer waters, we highly recommend booking a guided kayak tour in Condado Lagoon.
Note: There are no restrooms or changing rooms available.
3. Visit Distrito T Mobile Puerto Rico
Distrito T-Mobile is very close to the Panamericano cruise port. We recommend you take an Uber because there is no sidewalk.
- Hours: Monday–Sunday, 11:30 AM–11 PM
Distrito T Mobil quickly became a popular spot because of their big screens on the roof and walls, which gives this Times Square vibe. Expect bars and restaurants, and sometimes concerts in the concert venues.
